Furman Track and Field Completes Day One at Southern Conference Championships

Statesboro, GA - The Furman men's and women's track and field teams completed Day One of competition at the 2006 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Tyler Johnson and David Moseley each earned event medalist honors for the Paladins.
Johnson, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., won the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a final time of 9:09.22. The Paladins placed three runners in the top eight as Eric Albrecht finished sixth (9:43.38) and FJ Goodwin placed eighth (10:02.91).
Moseley, a junior from Louisville, Tenn., took top honors in the men's javelin with a final toss of 193 feet.
Page Bridges scored for the women's team with her fourth-place finish in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase. Bridges recorded a final time of 11:19.38. Chibuzo Aguocha earned fourth place in the women's long jump with a leap of 18-6.5 feet. Sam Robinson placed eighth in the men's 10,000 meter run with a final time of 33:01.79.
Several Furman athletes qualified for Sunday's event finals. Mary Jo Handley qualified for the finals in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 58.91. McKenzie Sharpe and Rebecca Mullen each won their preliminary heats in the women's 800 meter run, and will compete tomorrow in the finals. Mullen recorded a time of 2:13.80, and Sharpe earned a time of 2:14.59. Kristen Edgar made the finals in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.90.
On the men's side, Will Forrest qualified for the finals of the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.11. Patrick Morgan won his heat in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.22.
After the first day of competition, the Furman men's team sits in third place with 25 points, while the women are tied for ninth place with 10 team points. Day Two of the championships will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
