Furman Women Take Fifth at Conference Indoor Track and Field Meet

Clemson, SC -- The Furman women's indoor track at field team took fifth place at the 2006 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility. Chibuzo Aguocha set two new Furman records, and Whitney Jones broke one school-best time during the competition.

Aguocha set two new Furman records by leaping 5.77m (18'11.25") in the long jump and 11.98m (39'3.75") in the triple jump. The sophomore from Houston, Texas finished third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Aguocha set all-time Furman records in both events earlier this season.

Jones improved on her school record in the 60 meter hurdles, recording a time of 9.15 in the preliminary rounds. Jones ran a time of 9.26 in the finals, good for eighth place.

Kristen Edgar started off the Furman scoring by placing third in the 400 meter dash. Edgar won her finals heat with a time of 60.06, her fastest time of the season.

Junior McKenzie Sharpe and sophomore Rebecca Mullen each scored in the 800 meter run, placing third and fourth, respectively. Their qualifying times of 2:15.49 (Mullen) and 2:15.95 (Sharpe) were Furman's fastest this year.

The Lady Paladins placed third in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:56.87, good for six scoring points. The time marked the first sub-four minute time for Furman this season. Furman finished second in the distance medley, recording a time of 12:11.95, topping the previous season-best time by nearly 15 seconds.

Appalachian State won the overall women's indoor track and field championship, its sixth straight conference title with 148.50 total points. The Mountaineers claim their 13th crown in the 19-year history of the championships.
