Buchalski Sets Meet Record In 1,500m To Lead Paladins At Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Senior Allie Buchalski won the 1,500m and set a new meet record to lead the Furman track and field teams Saturday in the second day of the Catamount Classic, presented by the Catamount Travel Center, on the campus of Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.

Buchalski crossed the line in 4:19.49, knocking almost five seconds off the previous record of 4:24.06, set by Victoria Voronko in 2016.  She led a barrage of Paladin runners in the event, as Furman claimed the top five spots.  Sophomore Savannah Carnahan placed second with a time of 4:21.45, followed by sophomore Emma Grace Hurley in third at 4:24.55.  Sophomore Gabrielle Jennings claimed fourth place with a time of 4:34.85, and sophomore Riley Burr was fifth at 4:37.56.  Freshman Kristlin Gear placed tenth with a time of 4:47.24.

Freshman Emma Kuntz was the top collegiate finisher and took second overall with a time of 2:13.67 in the 800m, and sophomore Reagan Chewning placed 13th with a score of 2788 in the heptathlon.  Freshman Carlen Baran finished 24th in the 100m (13.07) and 28th in the 200m (27.72).

On the men's side, sophomore Jake Ogden finished second with a time of 1:54.34 to lead five Paladins in the 800m.  Sophomore Madison Daniel was eighth at 1:57.40, while sophomore Thomas Moore placed 18th with a time of 2:00.19.  Senior Hayden Cox finished 24th (2:02.11), followed by senior Quintin McKinnish in 25th (2:02.21).

Junior Jaylan Reid recorded a mark of 15.60 (50-02.25) in the shot put, placing fourth, and sophomore Luke Meade finished fifth in the 1,500m with a time of 4:00.67.  In the 100m, sophomore Nathan Kyei-Donkor placed 15th with a time of 11.16, and junior Chad Word finished 25th at 11.53.

Furman will compete at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville and the USC Open in Columbia next weekend.
