MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Allie Buchalski finished sixth to lead the Furman cross country teams Friday at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour at the Zimmer Championships Course in Madison, Wis.  The 10th-ranked Furman men placed fifth in the team competition, and the 21st-ranked Paladin women finished sixth.

The Paladin women finished sixth with 257 points.  No. 3 New Mexico won the meet with 87 points, followed by sixth-ranked San Francisco in second with 126 points.  No. 7 N.C. State placed third after recording 169 points.  Furman scored key victories over No. 11 Washington, fifth-ranked Stanford, and No. 17 Wisconsin.

The Furman men finished fifth with 157 points on Friday.  Top-ranked Northern Arizona scored 50 points for the victory, followed by 25th ranked Portland in second with 123 points.  No. 3 Syracuse placed third with 151 points, followed by fourth-ranked Stanford in fourth with 155 points.  The Paladins recorded wins over sixth-ranked Southern Utah and No. 11 Colorado State.

Senior Josh Brickell paced Furman on the 8K course, taking 13th place with a time of 23:54.3.  Junior Aaron Templeton was 20th with a time of 24:03.7, followed closely by senior Frank Lara in 26th place at 24:05.8.  Senior Tanner Hinkle finished 36th at 24:13.4, while sophomore Mason Coppi turned in a time of 24:26.5 to place 62nd.  Senior Troy Reeder placed 65th with a time of 24:29.2, and rookie Daniel Bernal crossed the line in 24:42.8 for 97th place.

"It was a great day for both programs," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "The women's race was an absolute breakthrough for the program and has us in the company of the top 12 teams in the country.  The men's program was only a couple of points away from beating a team that will win a trophy (top 4) in November.  My favorite stat of the day is that we were the best combined program, considering the finishes of both the men and women together."

Additional runners from the Furman teams will compete at the High Point VertCross Invitational at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C., on Friday evening.
