GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's Tanner Hinkle and Allie Buchalski have been named the Southern Conference men's and women's runners of the week, respectively, for competition that took place Sept. 8-10, the league office announced Wednesday.
This marks the second-consecutive week a pair of Paladins have swept the awards and the second honor of the season for Buchalski. Both the Paladin men's and women's teams swept the titles at the Furman Cross Country Classic Saturday in Greenville.
Hinkle, a senior from Mason, Mich., paced the Furman men with a time of 25:39.00, claiming third place. Paladin runners took five of the top seven spots and eight of the top 11 positions in the 8k race, totaling 15 points to earn the win over 14 other schools, including ACC foe Clemson.
Buchalski, a senior, won the individual title in the women's 6k race with a time of 20:30.42. The Johns Creek, Ga., native led the Paladin women's squad to a first-place team finish. Buchalski bested the second-place finisher by 12 seconds as the Furman women took five of the top six spots to score 18 points in the victory. This is the sixth weekly SoCon honor of her career.
The Paladins will compete at the Louisville Invitational on Sept. 30 in Louisville, Ky., the site of the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Also nominated for men's runner of the week: Will Sandin (UNCG) and Jahanzib Shabaz (VMI).
Also nominated for women's runner of the week: Bethany King (VMI).
