GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championship Meet on Saturday at Veteran's Park in Birmingham, Ala. The meet will mark the 84th Annual Southern Conference Cross Country Championship for the men and the 29th for the women. Admission is free to the public.
The championships will begin with the men's 8,000-meter run at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 5,000-meter event at 10:45 a.m. The top men's and women's teams will be honored as the 2013 Conference Champions, while the top seven individuals in each race will be named first team all-conference. Individual finishers placing 8th through 14th in each race will comprise the all-conference second team, and the top seven freshmen in each race will comprise the league's all-freshman team.
"Our entire program is excited about this wonderful opportunity," said Furman head coach Robert Gary. "Everyone realizes we aren't favorites, but we will really commit to placing as high as possible. We will need a total team effort!"
The Furman women's team, currently ranked 11th in the Southeast Region, finished fourth at last year's championships, scoring 118 points. Junior Sinead Haughey leads the Paladin returnees after placing ninth in the 5K race with a time of 17:55.00 to earn a spot on the All-Southern Conference second team in 2012.
The Paladin men's team, ranked eighth in the most recent Southeast Region poll, finished fifth at the 2012 championships with a score of 129 points. Paladin junior Tripp Hurt led the returning Furman runners with a seventh-place finish (24:55.46) last season to represent Furman on the all-conference first team.
