Chapel Hill, N.C. – North Carolina sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Furman, 10-8, in the Paladins' regular season finale Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Furman held a 7-2 lead with one out in the sixth when UNC's Lexi Godwin and Kianna Jones reached base on back-to-back singles to set the table fore Isabela Emerling's three-run homer that trimmed the Paladin advantage to 7-5.
Lauralee Scott replaced
Emme Buzhardt in the circle, but North Carolina greeted the sophomore with a bunt single and sacrifice bunt to bring the tying run to the plate. Bri Stubbs delivered an RBI single and Carlie Myrtle knotted the game with an RBI double to left field. Kiesten Licea drove in the go-ahead run and Destiny Middleton followed with a two-run double two batters later.
Myrtle, who allowed two runs on four hits over six innings of relief, worked around a solo home run in the top of the seventh to retire the Paladins and improve to 2-1 in the circle. She fanned four Paladins without issuing a walk.
Scott (3-9) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs and retiring just one batter. Buzhardt surrendered three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of relief after starter
Sierra Tufts allowed two runs in her 3.1 innings in the circle.
Furman jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Sylvia Burroughs drew a leadoff walk and
Ainsley Yoshizumi reached base on a bunt single ahead of
Alex Rose Molinar's three-run clout to right-center.
Chrissy Fleming doubled to right,
Chloe Fabio reached base on an infield single, and
Caitlin Goldwait legged out an infield hit to up the margin to 4-0. After a sacrifice bunt,
Riley Ludlam singled to drive in a run and
Kiley Perry brought Goldwait home with a grounder to the shortstop.
UNC (26-27) cut the deficit to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Perry pushed the led back to 7-2 by leading off the fifth inning with her 15
th homer of the season. She capped her three-RBI outing by belting her Southern Conference-leading 16
th homer of the season off Myrtle in the top of the seventh.
Perry and Molinar each batted in three runs while Yoshizumi went 2-for-3 at the plate. UNC finished with 14 hits on the day, including two apiece from Stubbs, Myrtle, Jones, and Carsyn Snead.
The Paladins (20-30) are idle this coming weekend before traveling to Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the 2023 SoCon Softball Championships, which is set for May 10-13.
