GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Dr. William "Bill" Pierce has been named President of the Southern Conference and will serve a two-year term, the league office recently announced.

Pierce, who has served as Furman's NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative since 2003, joined the Furman faculty in 1983 and is chair of the health and exercise science department.

A graduate of Davidson College, where he was a member of the basketball team, he earned a M.S. degree at West Virginia University and Ed.D. degree at Virginia Tech. He served one year as head basketball coach at Bluefield College in Virginia before coming to Furman.

Pierce is a member of the faculty of the Furman Institute for Running and Scientific Training (FIRST), which promotes running as a healthy physical activity and provides training information based on scientific principles. FIRST has been featured in recent articles in Runner's World, The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and the faculty has published a book titled Run Less, Run Faster.

He has completed over 30 marathons since 1977, and his own reserach and publications focus on how aging and pacing affect marathon running performance.
