HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC -- Furman
University on Wednesday, June 2, was awarded the Southern Conference Germann
Cup for the 12th straight year at the annual Honors Dinner taking place in Hilton
Head Island, SC.
The Germann Cup is given annually
to the Southern Conference school that fields the league's best all-around women's
sports program. The Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987, and is named after
former Southern Conference Commissioner Ken Germann. Points for the Germann
Cup are also awarded on a 12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for all sports.
Furman's women's programs combined
for a total of 84 points to edge Chattanooga by a single point, 84-83. The
Lady Paladins earned conference titles in soccer, tennis and golf and second
place finishes in cross country and basketball. Chattanooga posted league titles
in basketball and softball while finishing second in indoor track and third
in volleyball and outdoor track.
The Lady Paladins' 12 year hold on
the Germann Cup is a conference record, six better than the six consecutive
cups won by Appalachian State from 1987-92.
