Athletic Department Community Service Project

The Furman Athletic Department is committed to giving back to the Greenville community. Through the Athletic Department's Community Service Project, which is run the office of Student-Athlete Services , Furman athletes, coaches, and staff participate in numerous community service activities through the school year.

A Selection of 2006-07 Furman Athletics Community Service Projects

  • Football: Freshmen helped the Greenville Literacy Association set up for its annual book sale by moving thousands of boxes of books. 

  • Football: The team partnered with Lift America to donate food to local agencies before Thanksgiving.

  • All Sports: Dozens of individuals spoke to schools and represented their team and University at appearances throughout town.

  • Football: Team worked for three days with the GAIHN network to tear down and rebuild a house in inner city Greenville.

  • Men's Soccer: several players worked with kids on a weekly basis at local middle and high schools.

  • Men's Soccer: Conducted several free soccer clinics for youth.

  • Men' Soccer: Participated in Pelham Road Elementary carnival.

  • Women's Soccer: Working on a weekly basis in the winter and spring on environmental projects on campus (recycling projects, creek sweeps, plant control, privet pulling)

  • Women's Soccer: Participated in Campus Sustainability Day - cleaned the lake

  • Women's Soccer: Volunteered to pick up recycling after men's and women's soccer matches in the fall.

  • Volleyball: Conducted several middle school youth volleyball clinics.

  • Volleyball: Participated in Campus Sustainability Day by picking up trash around Furman's creeks.

  • Women's Tennis: Participated in University's Habitat for Humanity build.

  • Cross Country, Track and Field: Participated in a race benefiting a fellow runner from the Upstate who is battling bone cancer.

  • Men's Golf: Participate in University's Habitat for Humanity build.

  • Women's Golf: Conducted two sessions of pet therapy where team members picked up puppies at the humane society and took them to a local nursing home and visited with the residents.

  • Women's Golf: Participate in University's Habitat for Humanity build.

  • Men's Basketball: Members of the team volunteered at Lakeside Middle School as a mentor.

  • Cross Country and Track and Field: Team participated in a clean up project at Sliding Rock in downtown Greenville

  • Baseball: Members of the team serve as book buddies at a local elementary school.

  • Baseball: Players and coaches went in groups to speak to local elementary schools.

  • Softball: Conducted a softball clinic for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Spartanburg and Greenville.'

  • Softball: Several members of the team volunteered on a weekly basis at Armstrong Elementary.

  • Women's Basketball: Team assisted with the Greenville Race for the Cure walk.

  • Women's Basketball: Conducted a basketball clinic for local girl scouts
